Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning dental procedure that involves removing plaque and tartar from both above and below the gumline (scaling), and then smoothing out the rough surfaces of the tooth roots (root planing) to help gums reattach to the teeth, primarily used to treat gum disease (periodontitis) by addressing bacteria buildup deep within the gum pockets; essentially a "deep cleaning" of the teeth and gums below the gum line.
Key points about scaling and root planing:
Purpose:
To treat gum disease by removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smoothing the tooth roots.
Procedure:
A dentist or hygienist uses specialized tools to clean deep below the gum line, often requiring local anesthetic.
Two parts:
Scaling: Removal of plaque and tartar from both above and below the gum line.
Root planing: Smoothing out the rough surfaces of the tooth roots to allow gums to reattach.
